- Bathrooms: The University provides suitable bathrooms for disabled people and people with special needs.
- Entrances: The University provides suitable ramps on entrances as well as railings and elevator services (where appropriate) for disabled people and people with special needs.
- Classrooms: Where needed, specially designed seating facilities in classrooms and labs are provided.
- Health Clinic: The University ensures that the health clinic is properly always staffed and accessible.
ASU’s Policy for Students with Special Needs
ASU has a clear policy for students with special needs in line with its Mission to provide education to all academically qualified applicants. The Policy for Students with Special Needs outlines the purpose of the policy, the eligibility criteria for students with disabilities, and the types of disabilities that are recognized. The Policy emphasizes the University’s commitment to providing reasonable accommodations and support for students with disabilities to ensure their smooth transition into university life. It also highlights the responsibilities of various stakeholders, including student services, faculty, and University administration, in creating an inclusive environment. The document further describes the support services available to students with disabilities, such as physical accessibility, counselling, academic support, and financial assistance. It concludes with the procedure for students to apply for assistance, including the need to disclose their disability during the admissions process and to undergo an assessment by a committee. For reference, the Appendix in the Policy for Students with Special Needs provides a guide to different disabilities and their impact on learning and behaviour. Furthermore, the Policy clearly states that ASU “will aim to make all reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities” through the provision of “dedicated and qualified staff [and] assistance.” As a result, all applicants who fulfil ASU admissions criteria and who can be accommodated will be admitted. This is also stated in the Student Application Guide.
The university will have a designated office that will facilitate the provision of accommodation and support services for students with disabilities. The office will work closely with students and academic staff to identify and provide reasonable accommodation that will allow students with disabilities to participate fully in academic and social aspects of university life.
Campus Facilities
The university management will ensure that all campus facilities are accessible to students with disabilities, including but not limited to classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and recreational facilities.
The university will provide appropriate signage and assistive technology to aid students with disabilities in navigating campus facilities.
Outreach and Awareness
The university will conduct outreach and awareness campaigns to inform staff, students, and the general public about the university’s commitment to providing equal access to education for students with disabilities.
The university will encourage students with disabilities to participate in these campaigns to help raise awareness and reduce stigma.
