Master’s Thesis about the Criminal Liability for Medical Errors in Bahraini Legislation

A Master’s thesis defense was held at the University of Applied Sciences titled “Criminal Liability for Medical Errors in Bahraini Legislation – A Comparative Study” by the student Iman Tariq Mohammed Al-Sheikh Al-Joudar. The defense committee consisted of Dr. Abdelbasset Al-Hakimi as an external examiner and committee chair, Dr. Hussein Bani Isa as the supervisor, and Dr. Amjad Ali Al-Nuqresh as an internal examiner. The committee concluded by accepting the thesis as one of the requirements for obtaining a Master’s degree in Law.
The Dean of Scientific Research and Graduate Studies expresses heartfelt gratitude to the esteemed professors for their sincere efforts in completing this work (the thesis), and congratulates the student on successfully completing the research and defense.

Student, Shaikha Ebrahim Al Buainain
Shaikha Al Buainain, from the Department of Human Resource Management (MHRM) at college of Administrative Sciences, presented her Master’s thesis titled “The Impact of performance appraisal on the job stability of employees from the public sectors that are under the Civil Service Bureau of Kingdom of Bahrain” which was discussed under the supervision of Dr Mohammed Youssif, VP for the Administration, Finance and Community Engagement and Assistant Professor at the College. Her letter objective emphasized on studies that facilitates the appraisal process of both the job performance and its stability for employee who work for the public sectors under the Services Bureau, which resulted in a positive relation between evaluations and job sustainability.
Student, Noora Ebrahim Ahmed Hashim
Noora Ebrahim, from the Department of Business Administration (MBA) at college of Administrative Sciences, presented her master’s thesis titled “The Effect of Job Satisfaction on the Commitments within the Organizational Structure (Applied Research on Gulf Petrochemical Industries GPIC in the Kingdom of Bahrain)” which was discussed under the supervision of Dr Khairi Mohamed Omar, Head of Department of Business Administration at the College. Her letter aimed at the important role of promotional and interpersonal incentives that ensures the retaining of distinguished employees and strengthen their organizational commitments.
Student, Budoor Al Hajri
Budoor Al Hajri, from the Department of Business Administration (MBA) at college of Administrative Sciences, presented her master’s thesis titled “Applied Study on Sport Federations at the Olympic Committee – the impact of Innovative Administration on the Improvement of Human Resources Performance” which was discussed under the supervision of Dr Adel Alzyoud, Assistant Professor at the College. Her research reflected on the effect of administrative innovative role (Fluency, Originality and Flexibility) that improves the individual performance in Sport Federations of Bahrain Olympic Committee and the importance of developing strategies that is based on high accuracy to spot talented members and identify their areas of quality.
Student, Dalal Al Doseri
Dalal Al Doseri from the Department of Business Administration (MBA) at college of Administrative Sciences, presented her master’s thesis titled “Applied Research on the Islamic Banking within the Kingdom of Bahrain – the Effect of Qualifying the Human Resource on Organizational Commitment”, which was discussed under the supervision of Dr Adel Alzyoud, Assistant Professor at the College. Her research aimed on the effects that arises from qualifying human resource and its dimensions in (Delegating Authority, the Know-How, Job Values, Information Centralization) on the Organizational Commitment of Islamic Banking Sector within the Kingdom of Bahrain. This concluded the strategies that develops the technological infrastructure which simplifies the accessibility and the centralization of information.
Student, Maitha Mohamed Al Mullah
Maitha Mohamed from the Collage of Law, master’s in law, presented her thesis titled “Procedural Provisions for the Prosecution on Terrorist Crimes”, which was discussed under the supervision of Dr Husein Bani Issa, Vice Dean of College of Law and Head of Quality Assurance Unit and Assistant Professor at the College. Her research aimed at the role of Bahrain’s legislation that demonstrates methods on how to cope with terrorist crimes confrontation.
International Conference on Innovation, Technology, Enterprise and Entrepreneurship ICITEE
The International Conference on Innovation, Technology, Enterprise and Entrepreneurship (ICITEE) 2019 was held at the Grove Hotel and Conference Center, under the patronage of HE the Minister of Education and Chairman of the Higher Education Council in Bahrain, Dr Majid bin Ali A1 Nuaimi. The conference was organized by the University in association with London South Bank University (LSBU) with great partnership support from the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), the Association of Arab Universities (AArU) and sponsored by the media body’s Akhbar A1 Khaleeji; A1 Ayam; A1 Watan; A1 Bilad; The Daily Tribune; Daily News, BEnterpreneur Magazine in addition to the Palace Enterprise, The Grove Hotel and JD Ads & Events. The conference was attended by distinguished guests, scholars, researchers and practitioners who came all the way to Kingdome of Bahrain from 16 different nations.
This highly informative conference covered important subjects and themes related to innovation, technology and entrepreneurship including the future directions of Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, Virtual and Augmented Reality and Building Information Modelling (BIM) amongst many other important areas.
69 papers from 130 researchers from 16 countries (Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, South Africa, Turkey, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Nigeria, Kuwait, Kazakhstan and Lebanon) were included in the peer refereed proceedings, and around 29 papers produced by colleagues from ASU, some are jointly with other institutions.
Furthermore, 200 participants attended the opening ceremony, where the conference was chaired by an opening speeches from Professor Ghassan Aouad, The University President and Professor Paul Ivey, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Chief Business Officer, London South Bank University, United Kingdom. Followed with a speech delivered by HE Dr Abdul Ghani Alshuwaikh, Secretary General of Higher Education Council, representing the patron of the conference, HE Dr Majid bin Ali A1 Nuaimi, the Minister of Education. This continued with a welcoming speeches by the conference honorary chairs Professor Waheeb A1 Khaja, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Professor David Phoenix, Vice Chancellor of London South Bank University And the honorary guest HE Professor Ezzat Salama, the Secretary General of Association of Arab Universities. The conference also included the key note speakers Professor David Phoenix who explained about future directions of research and Professor Paul Ivey who highlighted on the topic of entrepreneurship. This was concluded with the Gala Dinner Speaker Professor Charles Egbu who emphasized on innovation. The second day of the conference was attended by HE Mr Sameer Nass, Chairman of the Board of Directors, where the best 4 papers of the conference was announced at the final ceremony and certificates been given to the members of the Scientific, Organising Committees and students who supported the conference.
This conference demonstrates our ability to attract researchers from across the globe and to run conferences of the highest quality. We should all be proud of what we have achieved in this truly international conference.
Student Council Election

The 13th round of the student council elections resulted in the victory of 15 students out of 21, from the four colleges of the University (Administrative Sciences, Law, Arts and Science and Engineering).
The primary purpose of this election is to implant the spirit of democracy among students. The announcing event included the winners students; Mohamed Janahi, Fahad Al Fahaid, Ahmed Al Khazali, Hind Khalil, Ahmed Al Buawas, Ahmed Thabit, Mozah Al Khalidi and Mohamed Al Jowder who represented the College of Administrative Sciences, then From the College of Law; Sayed Aqeel Al Alalawi, Suhaib Al Romi, Mohamed Janahi, Mohamed Al Shaer and From College of Art and Science; Mahmood Sultan, Mohamed Ramadhan and finally; Adam Fouad from the College of Engineering.
Professor Ghassan Aouad, the University President, congratulated the newly appointed members of the council for gaining the trust of their fellow students to be their representatives. Professor Aouad pointed out the importance of annual elections for the Student Council and how it reflects in the university openness and the Kingdom of Bahrain in line with the democratic approach of the Kingdom, which was laid down by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and his wise leadership. He also thanked the previous members of the Council for their efforts to serve the University and their significant role in organizing the various events in cooperation with the Deanship of Student Affairs. He pointed out that the strategy adopted by the University is formulated to encourage the democratic culture and the effective role of the council that will be played as the best ambassador for students. Noting that all conditions have been set to ensure success, equality and control of the electoral process.
And finally, he concluded the event by stressing on the genuine partnership between the University and the Student Council with regard to the students’ interest that will equip them to overcome the challenges they may experience during their educational journey and future.
ASU Encourages Entrepreneurship
The university encourages entrepreneurship by launching the business incubation center:
Professor Waheeb Al Khaja, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees highlighted on the importance of University’s commitment in supporting entrepreneurship that will broaden the educational horizon and the knowledge that influences productivity through entrepreneurship which contributes in supporting the economy of Kingdom of Bahrain.
He also mentioned that the University is keen to provide their students with necessary entrepreneurship skills in order to develop their capabilities through various corporate agreements with establishments that support such innovations and entrepreneurship.
Therefore, the University launched a Business Incubation Center that combines both innovation and entrepreneurship from all its academic programmes. This comes with the aim to generate all opportunities that enhance the students’ entrepreneurship concept to make them job-makers rather than job seekers. The Center is a strategic mechanism to enhance the students’ entrepreneurial skills that creates new ventures and partnerships opportunities.
Professor Ghassan Aouad, the University President, mentioned that the incubation center at the university represent a workroom that prepares youth who has the motive to experience real entrepreneurship feeling especially in their early stages. He also stressed on the importance of such projects in supporting the national economy by providing new work opportunities that contributes in reducing unemployment rates.
Professor Aouad also stressed that the university is devoted to support the students’ entrepreneurial ideas, along with their graduation projects at the bachelor and master’s level. This also included the provided facilities to enable students to develop their ideas and improve their views towards entrepreneurship.

Collaboration with Bahrain Businesswomen’s Society(BBS)

On Sunday, 12 February 2017, ASU reprised its assistance to BBS in their efforts to devise a new strategy with annual operational plan and key performance indicators. Mr. Hatem Dammak, Acting Head of Governance and Strategic Planning Unit at ASU led the working session at the premises of the women-led organization and helped the attendees turn BBS strategic objectives into specific, time-lined and achievable actions with clear responsibilities and measurable performance indicators. A follow-up session will be organised at the end of the month to finalise the implementation plan and give some guidance and insight on how to implement it successfully.
ASU and BBS signed a Memorandum of Understanding earlier in 2016.

The Role Of ASU’s Women In Scientific Research

On 2 February 2021, the Deanship of Student Affairs organised a workshop that has gathered all women at ASU, academics and administrators, with the aim to create a culture of working, supporting and learning from each other in the area of research and in finding shared research interests. The workshop was entitled “The Role of ASU’s Women in Scientific Research”. The participants were very passionate in joining various research groups and are looking forward to the next phase of the research process.
Cooperation between ASU & Bahrain Businesswomen’s Society (BBS)
On 26 March 2020, a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Bahrain Businesswomen’s Society (BBS) was signed. The President and Board members of this society attended together with a large number of staff and in the presence of Professor Waheeb Akhaja, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. After a welcoming speech by the Chairman of the BOT, the President gave an overview of the University, followed by a speech by Ms Feryal Nass, President of BBS and the event was concluded with a presentation by Ms. Monia Mensi of the BBS’s new Strategy which is the first outcome of the collaboration between the two organizations .
Women between Competitiveness and Empowerment
As ASU continues its support to empower women, Prof Saad Darwish President’s Advisor for Special Projects attended a Regional Forum on “Women between Competitiveness and Empowerment” on 11 March 2021 , which was under the patronage of the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism Mr Zayed R. Alzayani. The forum aimed to revise legislation that supports women; motivates women to contribute to economic development and helps them to lead. The forum discussed eight papers which covered a broad spectrum of issues related to women empowerment and competitiveness [7]
Support of Women Entrepreneurship
Prof Saad Dariwsh, President’s Advisor for Special Projects attended the Launch of Alwani Society in Bahrain on 7 November 2020. This society has the mission of highlighting the role that women can play in the Bahraini economy. The objective is to increase the percentage of women contributing to the labour market and to enhance the efficiency and capabilities of women to follow their chosen career. Further, to raise awareness within the wider Bahraini society of the rights and responsibilities of women to allow them to play a more active role in the economy. Many entrepreneurs’ men and women attended the event as part of their support. At the end of the event, the board and the chair of the society thanked all those who supported them. This support is a great opportunity for our female students to join this society as it can be of good help for those planning to start their businesses.

Participating in a Panel Discussion about the Role of Women in Future Sciences Organised by the Education and Training Quality Authority in the Kingdom of Bahrain

On November 6th, 2019, the Education and Training Quality Authority in the Kingdom held a panel discussion on the Higher Education, women empowerment in future sciences, and the best practices that the University is undertaking to prepare its students in these fields. Some Talent Club’s Members were invited to attend the event at the Headquarter of the Education and Training Quality Authority. They raised the significant role of ASU management in empowering the Women in Future Sciences. They also emphasised the important role of practical skills acquisition to enhance women’s excellence in the future sciences. HRH Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Wife of His Majesty the King and President of the Supreme Council for Women (SCW), patronised the opening of the second International Businesswomen’s Forum and Exhibition held under the theme “Female Engineers in the Business World”. ASU represented by Dr Assem Al-Hajj (VP for Academic Affairs and Development), Dr Ashraf Hendy (Dean of College of Engineering), Dr Islam Abohela (Head of Architectural and Civil Engineering Department) and fourteen students from the College of Engineering and the College of Administrative Sciences participated in the Forum and Exhibition. The event was organised by Bahrain Businesswomen Society (BBS) and took place at the Four Seasons Hotel between 13 and 15 November 2017. ASU representatives participated in the Engineering to Entrepreneurship Panel which took place on 14 November 2017. The event featured an international business Forum, B 2 B meetings and business networking. One of the themes of the forum was Sustainability, and Dr Assem Al-Hajj took this opportunity to invite the attendees of the forum to participate in the International Conference on Sustainable Futures which will take place this month at ASU between 26 and 27 November. ASU students found this event very useful and informative; they also highlighted that these events are eye-opening for them to the opportunities and what awaits them in the industry after graduation. Dr Islam Abohela asserted that ASU is keen on encouraging our students to participate in similar events which have a high impact on developing students’ soft skills. Dr Ashraf Hendy added that these events are significant for networking and seeking advice from industry. The team took this opportunity to approach the keynote speakers for potential future collaboration.

Successful Entrepreneur, Mrs Deena AlAnsarim, shared her experience and her success story with ASU’s MHRM students and how she managed to establish three entrepreneurial projects in the Kingdom of Bahrain, UAE and KSA. The visit took place as part of Prof Saad Darwish’s interactive approach to engage his students and inspire them, during the course focusing on leadership, team building, and how to overcome challenges through a lens of opportunity and Entrepreneurial spirit.

Under the patronage of the University president, Professor Ghassan Aouad and under the supervision of the Deanship of Student Affairs, the Women’s Club, in cooperation with the University Students’ Affairs, organised the first forum -“Challenge and Achievement”. The University shed light on the role of Bahraini women and their achievements by hosting influential Bahraini women, who were able to overcome their challenges with determination and will creating a pathway to showcase their accomplishments.
The forum came to life from the reform project of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, who supports the economic, social and political empowerment of women in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and trusts the role of women in building and promoting society. The forum aimed to highlight and recognise the accomplishments of women and their efforts. These women believed in their merit as Bahraini women, their ability to inspire and encourage many, and realised the importance of their active participation and fundamental role in society.
The seminar was attended by Fatima Al Atawi, Shaikha Al Shaiba, Reem Al Otaibi and Jowariya Al Shomali, who spoke about their experiences in challenging the circumstances with relentless determination and became successful.
Professor Aouad, expressed his happiness in organising this forum. He commented on the many achievements in which Bahraini women were able to prove themselves. He stressed that they are capable and qualified to change and assume prominent leadership positions at different levels in the society. He appreciated the role played by Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of His Majesty the King and President of the Supreme Council for Women (SCW) to support and empower Bahraini women in various fields.
He also mentioned that the Bahraini women worked with power and determination to achieve continuing success. They had been able to make a great impact, and proved to the community their determination and perseverance.
Fajer Althawadi, a member of students council and the President of Woman Club, expressed the University’s pride in hosting a group of Bahraini women who proved that nothing is impossible to achieve. She pointed out that this event affirmed that the determination and power of Bahraini women would continue to inspire. They had played a pivotal role in building the country’s renaissance and already proved their ability to meet challenges. They had achieved much success, and assumed many leadership positions in the Kingdom.

In this event, the group leaders including: Dr Faiza Zitouni, Dr Horiya Aldeeb, Dr Ahlem AlIthawi, Dr Camelia Camel talked about the main proposed research areas that were deduced from the initial brainstorming session from workshop 1 and filtered to thematic subjects that encompass the latest fads and most interesting trends under the umbrella of the role of women for sustainable development in achieving Bahrain 2030 vision. Professor Ghassan Aouad, the president of ASU presented his great wishes to all women at ASU on the International Women’s Day, as he always strongly supports and encourages all women at ASU to fulfil their full potentials.

On Sunday, 12 February 2017, ASU reprised its assistance to BBS in their efforts to devise a new strategy with annual operational plan and key performance indicators. Mr. Hatem Dammak, Acting Head of Governance and Strategic Planning Unit at ASU led the working session at the premises of the women-led organization and helped the attendees turn BBS strategic objectives into specific, time-lined and achievable actions with clear responsibilities and measurable performance indicators. A follow-up session will be organised at the end of the month to finalise the implementation plan and give some guidance and insight on how to implement it successfully.
ASU and BBS signed a Memorandum of Understanding earlier in 2016.

On 2 February 2021, the Deanship of Student Affairs organised a workshop that has gathered all women at ASU, academics and administrators, with the aim to create a culture of working, supporting and learning from each other in the area of research and in finding shared research interests. The workshop was entitled “The Role of ASU’s Women in Scientific Research”. The participants were very passionate in joining various research groups and are looking forward to the next phase of the research process.

The Applied Science University has a Pharmacist student Lynn Vino, who is currently completing her PhD studies at the University of Sydney, Australia under the supervision of Dr. Betty Shar and Prof. Dr. Iman Al-Bashiti, who winning the best research award presented at the conference via the Poster Presentation for the pharmaceutical practice category at the annual conference of the Association Australian Pharmaceutical Sciences (APSA) 2019 which took place in Melbourne in December 2019.
