As a part of Community Engagement Office at Applied Science University initiatives, ASU signed some MoUs’ with some institutions and entities from different sectors to extend its Engagement of the Community.

Dentalia Medical Centre Visit On December 3rd, 2019, the Community Engagement Office at Applied Science University represented by Dr Mohammad Alaa Al-Hamami, Office Manager, received Dentalia Medical Centre represented by Mrs Fatima AlSakran, Marketing and Public Relations Manager of the Centre. A meeting was held with the presence of Dr Mohammed Yousif, Vice President for Administration, Finance and Community Engagement to discuss cooperation between the two parties.

Dentalia medical center is a specialized center that contains dental clinic, dermatology and laser clinic, general medicine clinic and laboratory tests , in addition to that It contains Dental laboratory, training and medical lectures department. Yet we opened our dental clinic by specialized and experienced dentists, and the rest of our clinics will be opened soon.

Applied Science University Health Day

Under the patronage of Prof Ghassan Fouad Aouad, President of Applied Science University; and as a part of the Community Engagement Office initiatives at Applied Science University, CE Office and Deanship of Students Affairs in cooperation with King Hamad University Hospital and Life Pulse BH Team organised “ASU Health Day” at the University campus on Tuesday, 4 December 2018. The Health day included many activities such as blood donation campaign under the supervision of the Medical Staff of King Hamad University Hospital, Life Pulse BH Team from their side conducted comprehensive health checks such as blood pressure, blood sugar, natural therapy, dental examination, and provide health education on various topics such as public health, physiotherapy, sports therapy, mental health, food hygiene, in addition to measuring eye and eye pressure by Ghanim Optician. In addition, Shifa al Jazeera Hospital participated in providing tests to the attendees that included University Academic and Administrative Staff, students, and the local community. The Health Day also included questions, competitions and entertainment programmes for the attendees and the distribution of prises, including a ticket to Dubai. The University President and thanked the organisers and participants, and some group pictures were taken.

Rapid Test in Bahrain for Covid19

ASU in collaboration with the national medical team carried out a campaign to carry out rapid test in covid 19, the purpose of this campaign was to reduce cases of coronavirus infection and in line with the decisions of the Coordinating Committee and the recommendations of the National Medical in the all community of Bahrain [1]

ASU Covid19 Vaccine

 

For ASU, the well-being of the University community at Bahrain is fundamental, the health risks created by COVID-19 affects the physically and psychological wellbeing. As a consequence of the virus, premature mortality may occur in college students who are not vaccinated. “ASU concerned about this situation, represented by its President Ghassan Aouad who signed an Agreement of Cooperation with the Minister of the Public Health Dr.Faisal Yacob Alhamer and some private universities in Bahrain and a representative from Pfizer to secure a quantity of Pfizer vaccines to vaccinate the educational and administrative staff at the university with the aim to secure a safe return for students, academic and non- academic staff before the Fall 2021” [2].

Evacuation process in cooperation with the General Directorate of Civil Defense

Successful evacuation process in cooperation with the General Directorate of Civil Defense, with the aim of introducing the concepts of evacuation, the duties and responsibilities of the evacuation team, and the importance of protection and safety in evictions. The process aimed at identifying the evacuation procedures for various incidents: protecting the lives and properties, preparing the staff for the evictions, and ensuring that all detectors, alarms and firefighting equipment function well. This was preceded by a lecture given by the General Directorate of Civil Defense to the evacuation team at the University. They instructed on the proper procedures on dealing with emergency and fire, eviction of buildings as well as the emergency gathering points including individuals with special needs and responsibilities of the evacuation team. The University received an official letter from the Department of Protection and Safety of the General Directorate of Civil Defense on the success of the evacuation operation, where 244 employees and students only took five minutes to evacuate under their direct supervision. Dr. Mohammed Youssif, the Vice President for Administration, Finance and Community Engagement, stressed that the University is keen to meet the safety requirements of their students and staff, as well. He noted that the evacuation and orientation were part of the procedures implemented by the University to maintain their staff and students’ security and safety. He also explained that the experiment achieved the desired objectives, pointing out that the evacuation process reflected the effective cooperation and coordination between the University and the authorities in testing the plans and readiness of the University for Emergency Situations. It has also prepared the efficient employees of the University to deal with similar situations and equipment in case of emergency [3].

ASU and Dentalia Medical collaboration

Dentalia medical center is a specialized center offering dental and dermatological services. On Tuesday the 3rd of December 2019, the Community Engagement Office at Applied Science University representedby Dr. Mohammad Alaa Al-Hamami, Manager of the Office, received Dentalia Medical Center representedby Ms. Fatima Alsakran, Marketing & Public Relations Manager of the Center. A meeting was held withthe presence of Dr. Mohammed Youssif Vice President for Administration, Finance and Community Engagement todiscuss ways of cooperation between the two parties [4]

National collaboration

 

ASU in Collaboration with Bahrain Cancer Society

 

Within the framework of the agreement made by ASU and the Bahrain Cancer Society, different events have been held in order to promote health and well-being in the Bahrain community. ASU participated in the Annual Marathon organized by Bahrain Cancer Society in efforts with the world celebrations in October of 2017 for the fight against breast cancer which was held at Muharraq Corniche. It was organized by the Department of Public Relations and the Deanship of Student Affairs. This event is included in the Annual Plan of the Community Engagement Office at ASU and is scheduled to take place every October [5].

Visit by HE the Pakistani Minister of Health

05 February 2021, the University was visited by H.E the Pakistani Minister of Health and H.E the Pakistani Ambassador to Bahrain. The delegation was received by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees and President of the University and Vice Presidents and Director of Administration and Finance and Director of Marketing and public Relations. The delegation toured the University’s facilities and expressed their admiration of our Campus. In addition, opportunities for future collaboration between the Ministry of Health and Pakistani Universities and ASU were discussed [6].

International and Global Collaborations:

Cooperation between institutions, universities and organizations is vital for the growth of health, human development and well-being. ASU recognizes the essentials of teamwork, below is a list of international collaborations

  • “Two Agreements of Cooperation between The Delegation of International Committee of Bahrain Red Crescent Society And The United Nations Industrial Development Organization: The agreement of cooperation with The United Nations Industrial Development Organization in the context of the project “Market-Based Construction Skills Training for All” funded by the Government of Japan and implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Industry in the Bahrain to establish a vocational training center at ASU . The duration of the project is renewable and ends by March 31st, 2020 inclusive [7].

Agreement for covid19 vaccine  with the health minister and eight universities

ASU wants his academic community and academic communities in other parts of the world to have accessibility to health, everyone has the right including people with disabilities to an effective health system and inclusive health. In this sense, ASU has signed an agreement with the health minister for eight universities which will receive Pfizer-type vaccines. “The Pfizer vaccines are set to arrive between July and September, with 320,000 doses divided between St. Joseph University, the American University of Beirut, the Lebanese American University and St. George University Hospital. Fifty thousand doses will also, 15,000 to Applied Sciences University and 10,000 each to Balamand University and Holy Spirit University” [8].

Feena Khair Collaboration

The University contributed to “Feena Khair” national campaign which aims at supporting national efforts to combat the COVID-19, led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister and supported by His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, HM the King’s Representative for Humanitarian Work and Youth Affairs, National Security Advisor and RHF’s Board of Trustees Chairman. This entrepreneurship in tackling such pandemic highlighted the role of Applied Science University in gaining the students, staff, and local society trust and respect [9].

The Collaboration of “Bahrain Deserve Voluntary”

Applied Science University, the Community Engagement Office with the collaboration of “Bahrain Deserve Voluntary” team organized a carnival themed “I Can Change” on the occasion of World Health Day at Seef Mall, Arad. The event was covered by Bahrain National Television. Many sports teams from Bahrain and Saudi Arabia have participated in the carnival. Participations from the local community and neigh boring countries, and academic and administrative staff from the University, including the Deanship of Students Affairs, and students, also took part in the event. The carnival included many activities such as marathon, competitions, free medical check-ups, healthy practices, providing gifts and healthy products to visitors, and many other entertainment activities [10].

On September 2020, the University was visited by H.E the Pakistani Minister of Health and H.E the Pakistani Ambassador to Bahrain. The delegation toured the University’s facilities and expressed their admiration of AUS’s Campus. GCC Creativity Conference

Three members of ASU academic staff attended GCC Creativity Conference which was held on 8th May 2020 under the patronage of the First Deputy President of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sport, President of Bahrain Athletics Association, and founder of the KHK Mixed Martial Arts team, His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa. Shaikh Khalid stressed on Bahrain’s pioneering steps in hosting scientific and innovative conferences which aim at developing Bahraini youth skills. He also affirmed that the reform project has given a great importance to the scientific and technological field. His highness honored strategic partners and the cooperative parties as well as the keynote speakers for their cooperation to benefit the youth from a wide range of experiences. Then, he received a commemorative gift from President of “Ibtikar Bahrain Society” Osama Al Khaja on the occasion [12]

As a part of the Community Engagement Office at Applied Science University initiatives, ASU represented by a large number of academic and administrative staff, students, alumni and their families; participated in “Spread Hope” Walk-A-Thon 2019. The Walk-A-Thon was organized by Bahrain Cancer Society under the theme “Spread Hope” on the festival month of Breast Cancer Awareness in Water Garden City – Seef District on Friday the 25th of October 2019 [13].

The University’s participation comes in fulfillment of its strategic vision and objectives, which include participation in community educational, awareness and humanitarian activities, including support for voluntary and charitable societies and solidarity with cancer patients. The event was characterized by the wide participation of government and civil society institutions in various sectors and different age groups.

On Wednesday 25 September and Sunday 2 October 2019, Mr. Mohammad Salameh – Laboratory Supervisor at the College of Engineering and a certified professional safety engineer by IASP/OSHA, and by the American Safety & Health Institute – conducted a safety workshop as part of the student’s induction program of the new academic year 2019/2020 [14].

The safety workshop aimed at introducing the student to the essential safety standards, (PPEs) personal protection equipment’s and precautions as well as raising student’s awareness of the safety elements. It is all to ensure that students perform experiments safely in the engineering laboratories as well as on the work site.

Students from architectural and civil engineering (level S & level 4) attended the workshop and signed a form for attending the training.

Under the patronage of HE Sheikh Hisham bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa, Governor of the Capital Governorate; and as a part of the Community Engagement Office at Applied Science University initiatives, ASU presented by Professor Ghassan Aouad the president and a large number of academic and administrative staff, students, and alumni; participated in “Walking with the Blind” October 2019, which was organized by Friendship Society of the Blind under the theme “The Society Support for the Blind … It is our Duty.” on the occasion of the International Day of the white stick. The march was held on the 12th of October 2019 near AlFateh Coast. ASU participation came in fulfillment of its vision and mission to support the Bahraini society in all its segments. The University attaches great importance to serving the community by strengthen its services to support humanitarian initiatives in various fields and with all categories, especially those with special needs. It is worth mentioning that the University is keen to participate in events that serve the community and enrich volunteer work at various levels, as it organized many events that reinforce its role in engaging with community by hosting events highlighting the needs of special needs [15].

In the interest of the university, administration to complete support for the sports teams participating in the National University Games; The higher university administration met all the students participating in those teams by inviting them to the annual camp that the university holds for its members [16].

Prof. Dr. Ghassan Awad, President of the University, praised the efforts of the participating students and trainers in preparing for competitions in the previous period to reach the required degree of readiness. Emphasizing their ability to achieve achievements to be a continuation of the achievements made by the university in the academic aspect, to put the sporty touch to these achievements.

The University disseminates in the local community the importance of improving or promoting health and well-being in people and in the academic community, from promoting, supporting, managing, participating in different sports, where the University has different representations and people who support them in order to improve the health and well-being of all. Among these activities and sports are:

In conjunction with the Kingdom of Bahrain’s celebrations of Bahrain Sports Day and to promote the concept of sport for all and make it a way of life in a way that contributes to promoting public health in society, the University of Applied Sciences organizes various sports events on Tuesday, February 13, 2018, from twelve until three in the afternoon [17].

The university’s sports club, in cooperation with the Student Council, in its twelfth session, invited to participate in “Applied Champions League 2019” for football. And that was at Riffa Views Stadium [18].

On Friday 05 July 2019, the ASU sports club in co-operation with the students’ council for its 12th cycle organized an internal football league for ASU students and alumni held under the patronage of Prof. Ghassan Aouad at Riffa views soccer fields where seven teams from ASU students and one team from ASU alumni participated in the league divided in two groups [20].

The league started at 5:00 pm supervised by the student services office manager, Mr. Mohammed Al Najjar, and ASU football team captain Abdullah Waheed. Students played competitively and yet kept the brotherhood spirit and sportsmanship in the matches which were refereed by our certified students.

Four teams qualified to the semi-final stage of the league which was played in the presence of Prof. Ghassan Aouad, Dr. Ayman Al Dumoor and Mr. Mohammed Nassar. Prof. Ghassan was impressed with the skills of our students and saw some new talents scouted by Abdullah Waheed to go through the trials to join ASU football team next year in the National Bahraini Universities league.

On Thursday 04 July 2019, ASU participated in the Third Bahraini Universities’ Championship for Table Tennis organized by Gulf University and held under the patronage of Shaikha Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa, the Head of Bahrain Table Tennis Association [21].

ASU participated in two categories of the championship: The first category where Dr. Mohammed Al Hamami and Dr. Belal Rababa participated and the 2nd category was for Students, where our accounting and finance student Rashed Sanad participated.

Most of the Bahraini Universities competed in this championship, where ASU proved again they belong in the first place through the outstanding performance of student Rashid Sanad who started the championship by winning over Al-Ahlia university 3-0, followed by a win against AMA international university 3-1 which qualified him to the semi-finals where he played against UOB and won again with a comeback 3-2. Rashid reached the final competition with a minor injury in his leg, but with the support of Dr. Ayman Al Dmoor, acting Dean of the Deanship of Student Affairs, members of students’ council and Mr. Mohammed Al Najjar the Student Services Office Manager. Rashid overcame his injury and won the gold medal for ASU against Gulf University 3-1. Rashid was congratulated by Prof. Ghassan directly after the final game through a phone call after watching his game a live on ASU Instagram account. Prof. Ghassan expressed his excitement as he was watching Rashid playing the final game and thanked him for an outstanding performance.

We congratulate our national team for qualifying for the second round of the Gulf Cup championship in its twenty-fourth year, after his distinguished performance in match against the brotherly Kuwaiti national team, and we wish him success in the next rounds to return to the championship cup to Bahrain [23].

Congratulationto Ms. Fareeda Al Balooshi for winning the raffle for the third place due to her participation in the “The walking challenge in its second edition” that was organized by “Diabetes” and sponsored by Mohammed bin Abdullah and in cooperation with “Bapco” and “Southern Bahraini Diabetes Association” [24].

On 7th February 2020, with an excellence performance, high discipline and with major support of large audience, ASU soccer team and the title holder managed to achieve its third victory in the national league competition for universities in its second edition with a result of 4-1 in a match against university of Bahrain soccer team. The match was attended by Professor Ghassan Aouad, President of the University, the senior management and large number of employees and students to show their support to the team [25].

All university employees of the academic and administrative bodies, students and alumni were invited to attend and encourage the University basketball team in the second game of the National League of Universities that unites it with the Medical Team of the University of Bahrain [26].

The Applied Sciences University team, led by Majeed Muhammad, succeeded in achieving an important victory over the defending champion, the University of Bahrain team, with two clean runs, to win his first two points in the volleyball competitions in the National Universities League, as he is in the first match in the league and the result of the two halves of the meeting [27].

Manly performance and high discipline, backed by great public support, the university’s football team and the defending champion managed to achieve its third victory in the National League of Universities in its second edition, with a score of 4-1, in the match that brought it together with the University of Bahrain team. All university members from the academic and administrative bodies, students and alumni were invited to attend and encourage the university’s basketball team in the match that brings it together with the Arab Open University team [29].

The University of Applied Sciences extends its sincere congratulations to its students and graduates, the players of Al-Hidd Club Ahmed Boughamar, Abdel Wahab Al-Maloud, Talal Al-Shorouki, Jassem Al-Alaiwi, and Abdullah Al-Saqr, on the occasion of their coronation of the title of His Highness Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Football League, and we congratulate Al-Hidd Club for this crowning of the title [31].
